Imam Abdul Waheed

Imam Abdul Hafeez Waheed currently serves as the Interim Muslim Chaplain for The Center for Muslim Life (Duke University) and has served on the Religious Life Staff representing the Muslim Student Association (Duke University) for the past 18 years. For more than 36 years, Imam Waheed has been an active member of the Muslim American Community under the leadership of the renowned scholar, Imam W. Deen Mohammed. As a student of Imam Mohammed, Imam Waheed continues to work tirelessly to arrange college and university tours and lectures to provide an opportunity for others to hear the true message of unity and peace in Al-Islam in hopes of dismantling negative perceptions and opening the doors for dialogue. Towards this end, in 2008 Imam Waheed along with his Religious Life colleagues led an interfaith trip to Jerusalem for students of Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, and Hindu faiths. Imam Waheed has served as a chaplain in local and federal correctional institutions. He has also served as resident Imam in both the Bronx, NY and Durham, NC and has been a respected leader in the Durham area for the last 25 years. His greatest asset is building relationships and he has done so with all sectors of community life. He has served and held leadership roles on several committees including, Durham Congregations in Action, Urban Ministries, Durham Human Relations Commission, and the Chief of Police Advisory Committee. In recognition of his commitment to the community, Imam Waheed was the recipient of the 1996 MLK, Jr. Keeper of the Dream Award. Most recently, Imam Waheed was invited to lead a prayer as part of the 2017 Inaugural Prayer Service for Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina. Imam Waheed loves to share the message of Al-Islam to audiences through lectures, radio, discussion groups, and television. Imam Waheed is happily married to Khadijah Salaam and enjoys his family life with his four children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
