Hon. J. Thomas Marten

Judge Tom Marten was appointed United States District Judge for the District of Kansas in January 1996, by President Bill Clinton. During his years on the bench, he has been involved in a wide range of civil and criminal litigation. Judge Marten currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Sedona Conference, and has completed terms on the Information Technology Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States and on the Board of Directors of the Federal Judges Association. He has taught trial advocacy throughout the United States, and has been a winter Trial Advocacy Workshop faculty member at Harvard Law School more than 25 years. He and songwriter Don Schlitz have used Don’s songs as a vehicle for more than a decade teaching writing skills to lawyers. The idea – a songwriter generally has to tell a story in three minutes or less; judges and lawyers can benefit from that approach. Judge Marten currently serves on the Judicial Conference of the United States Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Evidence, and as chief judge of his court. During his practice years, he was a member of the folk-rock duo, Marten & Snell, and is a member of The Shoes, a Wichita band. Judge Marten is a Washburn University (BA ‘73) and Washburn University School of Law (JD ‘76). Following a 1976-77 clerkship with Tom C. Clark, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court (Ret.), he began nearly 20 years of general private practice with an emphasis on litigation, principally with Bremyer & Wise, P.A. in McPherson, Kansas (1981-96).
