Justice Randall T. Shepard

The longest-serving Chief Justice in the history of the Indiana Supreme Court, Randall T. Shepard is now a Senior Judge in the Court of Appeals of Indiana and a Visiting Professor at the Indiana University McKinney School of Law. Shepard's years as head of the state judiciary featured such milestones as Plain English jury instructions, minimum standards for death penalty representation, mandatory continuing legal education for lawyers, projects to increase the number of minority lawyers, programs on alternative dispute resolution, and workplace Spanish training for courts and clerks. Before joining the Supreme Court, Shepard served as judge of the Vanderburgh Superior Court, chief of staff to the Mayor of Evansville, and Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of Transportation in Washington. He has held positions of national leadership in the legal profession, including chairman of the National Conference of Chief Justices, and chairperson of the American Bar Association Council on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar, which accredits the nation's 200 law schools. Both Chief Justice William Rehnquist and Chief Justice John Roberts appointed Shepard to committees in the federal judiciary, a relatively rare honor for state judges. Shepard graduated from Princeton University, A.B., Yale Law School, J.D., and the University of Virginia School of Law, LL.M. He periodically teaches law at Indiana University, Yale, NYU, and at the Notre Dame law program in London. He was recently executive-in-residence at IU's Public Policy Institute and interim general counsel for the CF A Institute, headquartered in Virginia.
